Knobbe Martens and 11 Partners Recognized Among the World’s Leading Patent Practitioners

Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear LLP and partners Maria Anderson, Mark Benedict, William Bunker, Jon Gurka, Daniel Hart, John King, Salima Merani, Joseph Re, Arthur Rose, Mauricio Uribe and Lori Yamato have been recognized in the inaugural edition of the IAM 1000 - The World’s Leading Patent Practitioners 2012.

The IAM Patent 1000, from the publishers of Intellectual Asset Magazine (IAM), is a unique guide that identifies the top patent practitioners and firms in 40 countries around the globe. The IAM Patent 1000 consolidates the publication’s previous IAM Patent Litigation 250 and IAM Licensing 250, while also including top litigators, licensing advisers and patent prosecutors.

Knobbe Martens was one of just 12 firms recognized for its patent prosecution work in the United States and was among only three firms recognized in all three categories (prosecution, litigation and licensing) in California. Additionally, Knobbe Martens’ Seattle office was recognized for its patent prosecution and portfolio development capabilities and for serving the IP needs of the Pacific Northwest’s burgeoning high-technology industries.

As one of the largest patent firms in the U.S., Knobbe Martens was extensively recognized for its prosecution capabilities. As one interviewee said, “With patents, in addition to capturing all of the fascinating aspects of a new idea, the devil is in the detail, and following the rules is very important. Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear is especially careful and diligent. It is fantastic whether you are filing your first patent or your 250th. It scales to meet the client’s needs, bringing in equally talented attorneys to handle additional matters so that all of the applications receive the same quality and timely attention.”

Eleven partners in the firm were recognized for their prosecution, licensing and litigation practices. Maria Anderson was recognized for being a tactical thinker with a knack for developing patent portfolios specifically in computer science and e-commerce. Mark Benedict was recognized for having a great strategic mind, which he directs towards the development and management of IP portfolios for pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies. Daniel Hart was selected for his focus on prosecution, due diligence and opinions in the life sciences sector and is set apart due to his combination of technical and legal knowledge and delivery of great customer service. Salima Merani, who focuses her practice in the development and management of IP portfolios for pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies, was described as a dynamic up-and-comer. Mauricio Uribe was acknowledged as a super-talented electrical engineering and software attorney whose practice emphasizes client counseling and prosecution.

Knobbe Martens attorneys recognized for licensing include William Bunker, who was selected for his focus on the execution of patent protection programs. John King, who was also recognized for his prosecution work, was identified as a superb practitioner who has mentored a team of thorough and methodical patent prosecutors and is especially adept at handling new and innovative technologies. Arthur Rose, recognized as an exceptional, thoughtful and open-minded lawyer, has held several leadership positions at the Licensing Executives Society (LES). Lori Yamato, also a prominent LES member, was recognized as a quality lawyer and a specialized IP licensing expert.

Knobbe Martens’ litigator Jon Gurka won praise for his team-oriented approach, 24-7 availability and ability to handle disputes across the IP spectrum. Litigator Joseph Re was identified as a talented and popular lead counsel, with experience at both trial and appellate levels.

The IAM Patent 1000 rankings are based on five-months of extensive research and nearly 1,000 telephone interviews with attorneys at law, patent attorneys and in-house counsel to identify individuals recognized by market sources for their exceptional skill sets and profound insights. The IAM Patent 1000 also identifies the leading law firms in the market based on the depth of expertise, market presence and the level of work on which they are typically engaged.
