| Salima Merani, Ph.D.

Salima Merani, Ph.D., a partner at Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear LLP, has been named to The Recorder’s list of “Women Leaders in Tech Law.” Honorees were selected by editors of The Recorder based on their recent accomplishments and their demonstrated ability to lead.

Merani was one of 50 women lawyers recognized by The Recorder who "demonstrated leadership and expertise in solving the most pressing legal concerns tech companies can face." She was highlighted in the publication as one of the most highly sought-after lawyers in her field. Merani was also noted for her role as lead IP counsel in multiple case wins worth over a billion dollars in the past eighteen months. Most recently, Merani was lead IP counsel for Ulthera, Inc., a medical aesthetics company, for which she spent the last six years building an extensive global patent and trademark portfolio. In June of this year, Ulthera announced its successful acquisition by Merz Pharma Group for $600 million.

Merani has nearly fifteen years of experience in building patent portfolios for life sciences and medical device companies. She also has extensive experience in conducting patent due diligence for venture capital firms. In addition to representing venture capital clients, she also works with companies and investors on U.S. and foreign patent and trademark portfolio management, generating licensing revenues, gaining a strategic offensive patent position, infringement analysis, and managing global patent risk.

Additionally, Merani is past Vice Chair of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) USPTO Inter Partes Patent Proceedings Committee, which oversees the interference, reexamination and derivation subcommittees. In 2011, she was also appointed to the AIPLA’s Special Task Force on America Invents Act rulemaking. She is also a founding member of the Firm's USPTO Trials and Post Grant Proceedings Committee, and has represented clients in multiple patent disputes before the USPTO and international patent and trademark offices.
