Knobbe Martens partner Mauricio Uribe was quoted in the article “Copyright Law and Generative AI: What a mess,” published by the ABA Journal. The article discusses the rise in copyright lawsuits involving AI and why businesses should pay attention to them and how they refine their algorithms.
“A lot of these [copyright] issues have existed for some time,” said Uribe, adding that “it’s coming to the forefront of communications because of the availability [of generative AI].”
Commenting on the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts Inc. v. Goldsmith, Uribe said, “By my read of that Supreme Court decision, the majority opinion was saying fair use cannot usurp the normal derivative work in the normal sense.”
