Comprehensive report examines most significant Federal Circuit rulings of 2024 and how they could shape IP law in the years ahead
IRVINE, Calif., January 28, 2025 – Knobbe Martens is pleased to announce the publication of its inaugural Federal Circuit Year in Review report. The report includes detailed analysis of key Federal Circuit cases in 2024 and provides practical guidance on the notable developments affecting IP law.
The report was edited by litigation partners Sean Murray and Jeremiah Helm and includes an introduction from the firm’s litigation chair Sheila Swaroop.
Addressing legal practitioners and patent holders alike, Ms. Swaroop writes that the goal of the report is to help readers stay informed about the latest trends in Federal Circuit jurisprudence and how these decisions may influence their own practices, strategies, and decision-making in the year ahead.
Featured throughout the report are summaries and analysis of nearly 50 of the Federal Circuit’s most impactful IP-focused rulings of 2024. The report covers landmark decisions such as LKQ Corp. v. GM Global Technology Operations LLC as well as the court’s pending en banc hearing in EcoFactor, Inc. v. Google LLC.
Mr. Murray and Mr. Helm also underscore the noteworthiness of the past year in patent law, exemplified by the court’s decisions on several key issues such as patent eligibility standards and the role of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. “While the patent issues at play varied greatly in the court’s 2024 rulings,” they write, “the year included several significant decisions that helped clarify distinct areas of law.”
The Federal Circuit Year in Review report can be found in PDF form here. Earlier this month, Mr. Murray and Mr. Helm also presented a webinar on the five most significant cases decided by the Federal Circuit in 2024.
