Professional Profile 

Michael Burns, Ph.D. focuses on protecting and commercializing his client's inventions within the mechanical, medical device, and life sciences industries. He focuses on patent strategy in the fields of automotive powertrain systems, fluid pumps, masonry products, and medical catheter systems. His devotion to law and science has made him an essential link between appreciating a client’s idea and developing strategies to reward it.

Prior to joining the firm, Michael conducted cardiovascular research at a number of prestigious universities. At the University of Chicago, Michael was awarded the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award to study how oxygen affects blood vessel growth in the lung.

At the Ohio State University, Michael designed and built a flow system for studying how best to restore blood flow to an oxygen-deprived organ, such as a heart following a heart attack. At Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Michael studied how circulating blood cells adhere to the blood vessel wall under conditions of blood flow.
