Knobbe Martens partner Joseph Gerber shared insights and perspectives on his career path, the importance of mentorship, and his approach to client service in Am Law’s “How I Made Partner” Q&A series.
Mr. Gerber, who was elevated to partner earlier this year, is based in Knobbe Martens’ New York office and advises clients in a range of industries on trademark and brand protection matters. Discussing his decision to join Knobbe Martens as a lateral associate hire, he credited the firm’s “incredible depth of talent and unique culture,” driven by the high number of partners who spend their entire legal careers with the firm.
Mr. Gerber emphasized the impact that mentors at Knobbe Martens and throughout the legal community have had on his career, which inspires him to offer mentorship and career guidance to associates at the firm, and to give back to his community through pro bono service. He underscored the importance of mentorship in one’s career growth, and encouraged lawyers to begin seeking out meaningful connections with potential mentors as early as possible. “Even the most senior partners should want to see you succeed,” he added.
Sharing some of the lessons he learned on the track to partnership, Mr. Gerber explained how gaining confidence in his practice empowered him to bring the best value to his clients. “I think the lesson I’ve learned is to think for myself and trust my gut,” he said. “Applying cookie-cutter solutions to clients’ unique problems doesn’t work and isn’t providing the best value for clients.”
