Paul Spiel

Paul Spiel represents clients in a variety of intellectual property matters including patent prosecution, portfolio management, strategic counseling, and PTAB proceedings. Paul has extensive experience condensing complex ideas for clients and identifying the state of the art for innovations in the chemical, mechanical, biotechnology, and medical device fields. He has assisted clients with technologies ranging from:

• Chemistry such as chemical compositions, batteries and electrochemistry, and polymers
• Medical technology including non-invasive patient monitors, medical device coatings and formulations, and wound therapy products like negative-pressure wound therapy devices
• Biotechnology such as immunotherapy, DNA sequencing, and active pharmaceutical ingredients (API’s)
• Mechanical technology including additive manufacturing/3D printing, personal computing hardware, and injection molding and die casting

Prior to joining the firm, Paul worked as a patent examiner at the USPTO for approximately 3 years. He examined patent applications related to plastic shaping and molding with an emphasis in additive manufacturing technologies. Paul was affirmed in four out of five appeals to the Patent Trial and Appeal Board as of his departure from the USPTO. Prior to working at the USPTO, Paul worked as a patent attorney at a law firm in Germany and gained experience managing international patent portfolios for clients.

Paul obtained a B.S. in chemistry magna cum laude with a minor in biology. Paul later received a M.S. in chemistry from the University of Missouri where he taught general chemistry and conducted research in the field of supramolecular chemistry in a prominent research group. He attended law school at BYU J. Reuben Clark Law School and participated on the BYU Law Review Board as a lead note and comment editor. Paul enjoys mountain biking, snowboarding and skiing, listening to podcasts, and spending time outdoors with his family.
