In a recent Q&A with Law.com, Knobbe Martens partners Charlene Azema and Greg Phillips offered insights into their careers, backgrounds, and roles as co-chairs of the firm’s Trademark and Brand Protection group. Ms. Azema and Mr. Phillips were announced as co-chairs of the practice last fall.
The pair discussed key priorities for the practice, including renewed recruitment and mentorship initiatives, strategic implementation of artificial intelligence tools, and collaborative business developments efforts across the firm’s seven offices nationwide. They spoke to the “depth and breadth” of the firm’s Trademark and Brand Protection team, noting that the group includes dozens of lawyers who represent clients at all growth stages in widely ranging industries.
Discussing their leadership roles, Ms. Azema and Mr. Phillips explained how their career backgrounds have shaped their approach to practice leadership, and shared their perspectives on the skillsets and qualities that make for an effective practice leader.
The pair also offered advice for those seeking practice leadership roles, emphasizing the importance of developing practical leadership skills and working collaboratively with members of the practice whenever possible. “Look for chances to lead in any capacity, whether it’s taking ownership of a project, organizing an event, or volunteering for a new initiative,” Ms. Azema stated. “These experiences not only help you build confidence but also give you practical opportunities to develop the skills you’ll need as a practice leader.”
