In the most recent edition of Managing Intellectual Property’s “Behind the Case” series, partner Brian Horne offered insight into Knobbe Martens’ victory on behalf of Sigray, Inc. in a high-stakes trade secret and patent infringement jury trial earlier this month.
Mr. Horne led a trial team from the firm that, following a six-day trial, obtained an overwhelming defense verdict for Sigray, a leading pioneer in x-ray technologies.
During the trial, the team strategically focused on “mastering the record” and distilling issues regarding complex technical concepts into an accessible, jury-friendly narrative, Mr. Horne shared with Managing IP, adding, “there is no substitute for hard work and preparation.”
“As a defendant, it is always a challenge to convince the jury to wait until your client can tell its side of the story,” Mr. Horne said of the obstacles the team faced during trial. Spotlighting Sigray’s innovation story played a “significant role” in the team’s defense strategy, demonstrating the founders’ good faith and desire to “innovate and advance science,” he maintained.
