Overview
Paul Spiel represents clients in a wide range of intellectual property matters, including patent prosecution, portfolio management, strategic counseling, due diligence, and proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). He has extensive experience distilling complex technical concepts into clear, actionable strategies and identifying the state of the art for innovations across the chemical, mechanical, biotechnology, and medical device sectors.
Paul has assisted clients with technologies involving, among others:
- Chemical compositions, batteries, and polymer systems
- Non‑invasive patient monitoring devices, medical device formulations, and wound therapy products
- Immunotherapy platforms, DNA sequencing technologies, and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs)
- Additive manufacturing and 3D printing systems, injection molding and die casting technologies, and outdoor recreational equipment
Prior to joining the firm, Paul served as a patent examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for approximately three years, where he examined patent applications directed to plastic shaping and molding technologies, with a particular emphasis on additive manufacturing. Drawing on this experience, Paul brings a deep understanding of examiner perspectives and has a strong ability to navigate challenging prosecution issues and advance applications toward allowance.
Before working at the USPTO, Paul practiced at a law firm in Germany, where he gained experience managing international patent portfolios for a diverse client base.
Paul approaches his practice with a strong technical foundation and a client‑focused mindset, recognizing that effective representation requires not only scientific and legal proficiency, but also responsiveness, organization, and an appreciation of market and business realities. Outside of his practice, Paul enjoys snowboarding and skiing, mountain biking, kiteboarding, and spending time outdoors with his family.
