Salima Merani, Ph.D., Joseph Re and Bryan Wahl, M.D., partners of Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear LLP, are among the 100 leading intellectual property attorneys in California for 2012 as selected by the Daily Journal.
Joseph Re is included in the 75 Leading Intellectual Property Litigators list. Re, who practices in both trial and appellate work, was recognized for his successful defense of Applied Medical Resources Corp. against allegations of infringement of numerous patents related to surgical instruments. Re was also recognized for his defense of Smith & Nephew, a worldwide healthcare leader, against allegations of infringement of numerous patents related to negative pressure wound therapy.
Salima Merani, Ph.D. and Bryan Wahl, M.D. are included in the 25 Leading Portfolio Managers list. Dr. Merani decided to become a lawyer during her doctorate research at McGill University when she saw the need for attorneys who understand both science and the law. More than a decade later, Merani focuses her practice on working with both start-ups and venture capital firms, which gives her a strategic advantage of seeing both sides of the process. In the past year, Merani obtained $10.5 million in venture capital for client Ulthera Inc., a provider of cosmetic lifting and toning processes for the face and neck.
Dr. Wahl focuses his practice on medical devices and made the transition into law following his residency in internal medicine. Wahl is still a practicing physician, and works one or two shifts a week at a local hospital. Working on both sides of the medical industry allows him to both help patients and help clients patent medical devices. Recently, Wahl represented Embrella Cardiovascular Inc., a developer of a device which prevents strokes during cardiovascular procedures, which was acquired by Edwards Lifesciences Corp. for $43 million.
