Joseph Re, a litigation partner at Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear LLP, has been named an “MVP of the Year” by Law360. Attorneys selected for this honor include those with successes in high-stakes litigation, record-breaking deals, and complex global matters.
Re, named to the Intellectual Property MVP list, is a nationally recognized trial and appellate attorney known for handling high-stakes patent cases throughout the country for both patent holders and accused infringers. Re sits on the Federal Circuit’s Advisory Council, and has earned victories as the leading lawyer in several significant trials and appeals this past year. Most recently, in October Re led his Knobbe team to achieve a complete victory for longstanding client Masimo in obtaining a verdict of more than $466 million against two Philips defendants. Additionally, the jury rejected Philips’s infringement claims for $169 million. This is the second nine-figure damages award for Masimo, which the firm has represented in high-stakes patent litigation since 1999.
Re’s other notable achievements this year include a victory in March on behalf of Applied Medical Resources, Corp. in an inventorship dispute filed by Covidien Plc and Gaya Ltd. In July 2014, the Central District Court of California ruled in Applied’s favor on all of the inventorship and ownership claims, holding that no individuals associated with Gaya are inventors on any of the five Applied patents at issue.
Law360, a legal news service operated by LexisNexis subsidiary Portfolio Media Inc., will begin publishing profiles of selected attorneys beginning this week. To compile this year’s class of MVPs, Law360 editors reviewed more than 800 nomination submissions, seeking to identify attorneys with the biggest wins and most significant contributions to one of 29 practice areas. Re is one of just 171 attorneys ultimately selected nationwide.
