Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear LLP, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the United States, announces Salima Merani, Ph.D. and Bryan Wahl, M.D. have been named to the Daily Journal’s 2013 list of the Top Intellectual Property Attorneys in California. Both Merani and Wahl were recognized among the Top 25 Intellectual Property Portfolio Managers.
The Daily Journal selects attorneys for inclusion on its list based on a number of criteria, including each nominee’s major intellectual property successes over the last year.
Salima Merani assisted clients in lucrative financing deals and acquisitions that amounted to close to half a billion dollars in the last year alone. As lead counsel for MindFrame, a medical device company that developed ground-breaking technology in the treatment of strokes, Merani successfully procured MindFrame’s first issued US patents. Later in the year, she served as lead counsel in the acquisition of MindFrame by a global healthcare company. Merani represented several venture capital firms in deals, including a $30 million investment in spinal technology company, Relievant Medsystems. Merani also helped cosmetics company, SkinMedica, build its patent and trademark portfolios and helped to guide the company in its December acquisition by Allergan for $350 million.
Bryan Wahl represents Osseon Therapeutics Inc., a startup company responsible for developing a system for treating vertebral compression fractures. Wahl tended to Osseon’s patent portfolio and helped the company with its IP due diligence process, which led to the company securing more than $13 million in financing earlier this year. In addition to building a patent portfolio on behalf of Sapheon, a Santa Rosa-based startup medical device company, Wahl also was involved with their IP financing diligence; Sapheon’s last financing round lead to more than $8.6 million in investment. Wahl also represented a prominent university in obtaining key patents licensed to a startup company developing a promising treatment for HIV.
