IRVINE, Calif., May 23, 2024 – Knobbe Martens is pleased to announce that litigation partners Sheila Swaroop and Ali Razai have been recognized as “Top Intellectual Property Lawyers” by the Daily Journal. Ms. Swaroop and Mr. Razai join renowned attorneys throughout California in this recognition of their legal prowess in the IP sector.
Ms. Swaroop chairs the firm’s litigation practice group and has litigated complex technology cases for over two decades. She has played a pivotal role in a number of high-profile litigation matters at the firm, including the firm’s representation of Masimo Corporation in a headline-grabbing patent infringement case against Apple at the International Trade Commission that resulted in an import ban on infringing Apple Watches. The Daily Journal also highlighted her successful representation of Fisher & Paykel Healthcare in asserting patents in the respiratory care area, and her role in successfully arbitrating an inventorship dispute on behalf of The Institute for Cancer Research at Fox Chase Cancer Center.
In her profile, Ms. Swaroop highlighted several trends she is seeing in the IP litigation space, including a rise in the number of trade secret cases, and a greater focus on litigants’ disclosure of financial interests in cases.
Mr. Razai is an industry-leading litigator with a technical background as a former molecular biologist. He has successfully led high-stakes cases for clients like lululemon, Luxottica, Ligand Pharmaceuticals, The HydraFacial Company, Z-Medica, and numerous others. Most recently, Mr. Razai has led a string of wins for health care equipment and testing manufacturer Spectrum Solutions, including securing a decisive victory in IPR proceeding against DNA Genotek before the USPTO’s Patent and Trial Appeals Board and a win in a related district court case where the court granted Spectrum’s motion for summary judgment of non-infringement of all patents-in-suit. Mr. Razai also led a team representing Spectrum Solutions to victory in inter partes review challenges of five separate patents owned by Longhorn Vaccines & Diagnostics.
Speaking to broader legal trends, Mr. Razai said he has observed a longer pendency of cases.
He added, “This many be caused by the continuing clearance of the backload of cases created during the pandemic, increased litigation defense budgets, or other unidentified factors.”
