Knobbe Martens Recognized as National Leader in Patent Challenges and PTAB Proceedings by Docket Navigator

Docket Navigator, a leading patent intelligence research platform, has recognized Knobbe Martens – along with its attorneys – as among the nation’s top patent challengers, as well as one of the most successful firms in representing patent owners before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). The rankings appeared in Docket Navigator’s newly released “2020 Year in Review” report, an annual analysis of the key players and events in patent litigation.

Knobbe Martens ranked second in the category of “Top Patent Challenger Firms” for the number of new Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) cases it brought in 2020. Four Knobbe Martens lawyers were recognized as “Top Patent Challenger Attorneys” in new ANDA cases, including Partner William Zimmerman in Washington, D.C. (No. 1); Partner Joseph Reisman in San Diego (No. 14); Partner Carol Pitzel Cruz in Seattle (No. 16); and Associate Kimberly Kennedy in San Francisco (No. 22).

In addition, the firm was acknowledged for its prolific PTAB cases and for obtaining successful outcomes for patentees at the PTAB. The firm ranked fifth nationally in its representation of patent owners before the PTAB in 2020, with 44 proceedings. Partner Stephen Larson in Orange County was responsible for 24 of those proceedings, earning him a 25th place ranking among attorneys. Meanwhile, Knobbe Martens had the fifth highest rate of achieving institution success for patent holders, having secured successful outcomes in 60% of the 199 cases it has brought since the PTAB was created in 2012.
