The rankings showed that Knobbe Martens outpaced its rivals by lopsided margins, obtaining more patents in 2007 for San Diego clients than the next four closest law firms combined.
The analysis included all law firms that obtained patents for San Diego companies, individuals and universities from 2005 – 2007, regardless of the location of the law firm. The patents were issued in a wide variety of technology fields, including biotech, medical device and wireless communications technologies.

The Patenting Strategy analysis also ranked the following top ten geographic regions within San Diego County showing the most patent activity over the three-year period:
