Chambers and Partners has once again recognized Knobbe Martens as one of the premier intellectual property firms in the United States. In the newly released 2021 Chambers USA guide, the firm received a Band 1 ranking – the highest – for Patent Prosecution in California for the 4th year in a row. Knobbe Martens also ranked for Patent Litigation and Life Sciences.
In addition, the guide singled out partners Joseph Re and Salima Merani, Ph.D. for their exceptional work; both have been recognized by Chambers multiple times in the past.
The annual guide, which ranks the country’s top firms and attorneys, is the result of in-depth market analysis and comprehensive independent research conducted over seven months by a team of 200 analysts. The process includes interviewing thousands of peers, clients, and industry experts to gather insight into law firms and individual attorneys; more than 34,000 interviews were conducted for the 2021 guide.

Merani received a ranking in California in two categories: Patent Prosecution and Life Sciences IP/Patent Litigation. Chambers praised her “sophisticated representation of life sciences companies in patent prosecution and portfolio management.” Merani’s peers described her as “incredibly knowledgeable” and “a fierce advocate” who “consistently does excellent work” for her clients, which in addition to established life sciences companies include both emerging companies and their investors.
Re ranked in California for Patent Litigation. A nationally recognized trial and appellate attorney who currently serves as President of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, Chambers described him as “experienced in representing both holders and alleged infringers of patents at trial and on appeal across a range of venues throughout the US.” Re’s peers lauded him as “a master of the courtroom” whose “ability to communicate complicated technical matters in an understandable way is unrivaled.”
