IRVINE, Calif. July 7, 2023 – Knobbe Martens is pleased to announce that two partners have been honored by Profiles in Diversity Journal® for their leadership and mentoring skills. Shannon Lam was selected as a winner of the Journal’s 2023 “Women Worth Watching in STEM Awards”, and Sheila Swaroop was one of the recipients of the 2023 “Asian Leadership Awards.”

Profiles in Diversity Journal® is dedicated to promoting and advancing diversity, inclusion, and equity in the corporate, government, nonprofit, STEM, and higher education sectors. Women selected to the “Women Worth Watching in STEM Awards” are recognized for their research, leadership, and commitment to mentoring in the field of STEM. Meanwhile, the “Asian Leadership Awards” honor leaders who have displayed excellence in guiding their colleagues, influencing their peers, mentoring emerging leaders and being involved in the community at large.

Ms. Lam, who has a biomedical engineering background, is an industry-recognized partner at Knobbe Martens with a practice focused on implementing strong patent strategies for clients across an array of industries. She serves as chair of the firm’s Mentor Committee and was co-chair of the Women Associates Advisory Committee.

On the things that can be done to move women forward in STEM, Ms. Lam says, “Organizational culture needs to change to move women forward in STEM. [Organizations] can start by designating a group of people from different areas of the organization to develop and implement a strategy that makes sense for that organization. It is important to measure and monitor changes to maintain positive momentum and correct course where needed.”

Co-chair of Knobbe Martens’ firmwide litigation and ITC litigation practice groups, Ms. Swaroop is a skilled litigator who has litigated complex technology cases through trial and appeal for companies of all sizes for over two decades. In addition to her practice leadership roles, Ms. Swaroop is committed to supporting women and elevating diversity efforts within the firm and broader IP space.

Ms. Swaroop’s passion is learning about new technology and using the law to protect them. “Our clients are constantly innovating and developing new technologies. We get to see those inventions come to life, and we help our clients protect them,” said Ms. Swaroop.
