IRVINE, Calif., June 20, 2025 – Knobbe Martens partner Salima Merani, Ph.D., co-chair of the firm’s Medical Device practice, was recently profiled as among The Recorder’s 2025 “Women Leaders in Tech Law,” part of that publication’s California Legal Awards.
Honorees, including Dr. Merani, were recognized for not only being among the top women attorneys contributing to progress in the technology industry, but also for their leadership in “[forging] pathways for all women attorneys in the tech industry.”
In her profile, Dr. Merani spoke about her proudest achievements from the last year, her advice for women starting out in tech law, and what initiative has helped her grow most in her career. Speaking to that last point, Dr. Merani discussed the important role her mentorship of tech executives and lawyers has played in helping her career flourish. “Leveraging my 25 years of experience with tech venture capitals, C-Suite executives and boards to help leaders successfully navigate complex issues has been the highlight of my career,” she said.
Dr. Merani has 25 years of experience in building patent portfolios and managing complex acquisitions for global life sciences companies, and has served as lead IP counsel in successful transactions totaling billions of dollars. Her track record of working with startups and venture capital firms in the medtech industry has helped bring life-saving and innovative treatments to the market. Dr. Merani, a graduate of UC Berkeley Law and McGill University, credits her innovative medtech and venture clients for inspiring her work, including Cala Health, Evident Vascular, Alpheus Medical, Vensana Capital and many others.
Frequently lauded as among the top lawyers advising clients in the life sciences and technology industries, Dr. Merani has been the recipient of numerous industry awards just this year. These honors include, among others, a standout ranking in the 2025 Chambers USA guide, being named among the finalists for “Life Sciences Lawyer of the Year” at the 2025 Women in Business Law Awards, and inclusion among those lawyers doing top tier patent work in the 2025 IAM 1000 guide.
