LOS ANGELES, CALIF., March 6, 2024 -- Knobbe Martens, one of the world’s leading intellectual property law firms, announced today that it has named new leaders for its advertising, media and entertainment practice. Trademark and brand protection partner Jonathan Hyman and litigation partner Hans Mayer, both based in the firm’s Los Angeles office, will co-lead the group.

Knobbe Martens has a deep and successful track record counseling clients in launching, enforcing, and defending their advertising and media. With a focus on helping clients navigate evolving policy and best practices, the team’s experience ranges from advising on consumer protection laws to litigating and defending false advertising claims as well as addressing social media, AI, and copyright issues.

The team is especially adept at preclearance of marketing and advertising claims and addressing these issues with the Federal Trade Commission and National Advertising Division. Lawyers in the group assist clients across a wide range of industries, including media, entertainment, health and fitness, fashion, consumer products, food and beverage, e-commerce, medical, pharmaceutical, finance, and transportation.

Speaking on the appointments of Mr. Hyman and Mr. Mayer, Knobbe Martens managing partner Steven Nataupsky said, “Companies around the world rely on Knobbe Martens to help understand the latest developments in advertising, media and entertainment law and these developments’ direct impact on their businesses. I am confident that under the skilled leadership of Jonathan and Hans, the firm’s advertising, media and entertainment practice will continue to grow and be a tremendous resource for our clients.”

Mr. Hyman’s practice is focused on domestic and foreign trademark prosecution, advising on copyrights, advertising and media issues, and intellectual property licensing. He has represented numerous clients in proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and assists clients in growing, managing and protecting their trademark and copyright portfolios around the world. This includes working with companies to create and leverage robust intellectual property portfolios to increase value for capital raises/strategic exits. Mr. Hyman has been recognized as a leading trademark lawyer by World Trademark Review and World Intellectual Property Review, in addition to receiving several other accolades.

“Today’s economy is more competitive than ever, which means companies must constantly develop new strategies to promote and defend their brands,” said Mr. Hyman. “Our team is exceptionally well-situated to help clients understand the competitive landscape, and vigorously promote, enforce and defend their brands through today’s ever evolving advertising and media opportunities. I look forward to the opportunity to work with Hans to lead such a talented group.”

Mr. Mayer’s trial teams have won nearly $300 million. In addition to representing clients in district courts throughout the country, Mr. Mayer has handled numerous cases before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. Bolstered by his background in biomedical engineering and entertainment law, his cases have covered a wide array of technologies, products, and emerging advertising and media issues. Mr. Mayer also advises clients on worldwide brand protection and has directed global enforcement and litigation matters. His recent accolades include Law360 “Rising Star,” Benchmark Litigation “California Future Star,” and multiple recognitions from Legal 500.

Mr. Mayer said of his new role, “With the constantly changing nature of advertising and media policy, and the ever-growing threat of class action false advertising litigation, it is more important than ever for companies to ensure they are positioned to rise above their competitors—and to defend their efforts.
