Knobbe Martens Ranked as Top Trademark Firm with Seven Partners Recognized as Leading Trademark Attorneys

Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear, LLP has once again been ranked as one of the top trademark law and litigation firms in the nation by the World Trademark Review (WTR) in the “WTR 1000”. This is the sixth consecutive year the firm has been recognized.

The firm received a “gold tier” California ranking for their practice in trademark enforcement and litigation, and trademark prosecution and strategy. Firms that receive a “gold tier” ranking and attract the most positive comments from outside sources have established top-level reputations and are able to secure high-profile work from the most demanding clients. WTR recognized Knobbe Martens’ trademark practice as being, “very professional, thorough and prompt. It has invaluable experience and keeps the client’s best interests at heart”.

Seven Knobbe Martens partners were individually recognized as leading trademark lawyers:

Catherine Holland, known for her brand management and licensing work with sports, nutritional supplement, publishing and software companies, was described as a versatile practitioner “that likes to sink her teeth into the legislative process both at home and abroad, so she has up-to-the minute knowledge of the changing global landscape.”

Jonathan Hyman was described as being “in particular demand among food and drink companies of late, winning mandates from BJ restaurants, the Jelly Belly Candy Company and Bai Brands.” His practice includes domestic and international trademark prosecution, enforcement and clearance, proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB), social media issues, intellectual property licensing, copyrights, rights of publicity, domain name disputes, entertainment law, and client counseling.

Susan Natland, who focuses on domestic and international trademark law, including all aspects of trademark protection, portfolio management, and enforcement and licensing, was described as an “excellent litigator”, and a “favourite among media, entertainment and celebrity clients.” To her clients, she “cuts a dash on all manner of contentious work.”

Gregory Phillips focuses his practice on counseling clients with their domestic and international trademark matters, including clearance, registration and enforcement, federal trademark litigation, and petitioning and defending opposition and cancellation matters. He was described as “versatile” and was said to have an “A-to-Z practice that encompasses everything from searches and clearance to federal trials”.

Diane Reed was commended for her work while tackling a dispute for firm client Monster Energy, in which she debunked the opposition’s claims and helped the firm secure both damages and attorney’s fees. Her practice focuses on IP transactions, where she has helped many brand owners negotiate major agreements.

Jeffrey Van Hoosear, who focuses his practice on prosecution, maintenance and exploitation of trademarks, was recognized for his ability to maintain “an active client practice, partnering on a long-term basis with businesses to develop their intellectual property and maximizing its value.” His “stronghold” is in apparel and sporting goods where he has advised big name brands, such as renowned fashion house, Kate Spade.

Lynda Zadra-Symes, a litigator who represents clients through all stages of litigation in trademark, copyright, patent, trade secret, false advertising and unfair competition cases, was described as a “digital doyenne.” As a WIPO domain name arbitrator, Ms. Zadra-Symes was commended for her ability to stay “up-to-date on the issues of the day.”

World Trademark Review is the only standalone ranking publication to exclusively focus on trademark practices and practitioners. To compile the WTR 1000, researchers interviewed hundreds of in-house and private practice lawyers and attorneys based in over 50 countries and were asked to identify the leading individuals and firms in both contentious and non-contentious work. Firms qualified based on their depth of expertise, market presence and the level of work on which they are typically instructed.
