Knobbe Martens Ranked as Top Trademark Firm; Six Partners Recognized as Leading Trademark Attorneys

Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear LLP has once again been ranked as one of the top trademark law and litigation firms in the nation by the World Trademark Review 1000 (WTR 1000). This is the fifth consecutive year the firm has been so recognized.

The firm received a “gold tier” California ranking for their practice in trademark enforcement and litigation, and trademark prosecution and strategy. Firms that receive a “gold tier” ranking attract the most positive comments from outside sources, have established top-level reputations and are able to secure high profile work from the most demanding clients. World Trademark Review recognized Knobbe Martens’ trademark practice as one of the biggest in the United States saying, “Given the strength of the firm’s patent practice, it is no surprise that the brands group shines when protecting the valuable brands of household-name technology companies, as well as start-ups.”

Six Knobbe Martens’ partners were individually recognized as leading trademark lawyers:

Catherine Holland was recognized for her brand management and licensing work with sports, nutritional supplement, publishing and software companies. She was described as a “versatile practitioner with expertise encompassing all aspects of trademarks, as well as copyrights and domain names.”

Susan Natland, who practices domestic and international trademark law, including all aspects of trademark protection, portfolio management, enforcement and licensing, was described as “remarkably tough and knows how to fight her client’s corner.” She was also recognized for the well-rounded nature of her practice as well as “the incredible speed and efficiency with which she works.”

Gregory Phillips focuses his practice on counseling clients with their domestic and international trademark matters, including clearance, registration and enforcement, federal trademark litigation, and petitioning and defending opposition and cancellation matters. He was described as “respected as a general counsellor” and recognized for his ability in enforcement proceedings of all kinds.

Diane Reed was commended for her “ability to swiftly broker the most complex licensing, distribution, manufacturing and development agreements”. Her practice includes licensing, distribution, manufacturing and development agreements, as well as trademark portfolio development, management and enforcement.

Jeffrey Van Hoosear, who focuses his practice on prosecution, maintenance and exploitation of trademarks, was described as exhibiting “super mastery of the procedural aspects of cases and, with that, is always able to turn things to the advantage of his client”. Furthermore, he was recognized for his ability to keep a clear focus on getting the most beneficial outcome for his clients, while avoiding “unnecessary ego-driven battles.”

Lynda Zadra-Symes, a litigator and WIPO domain name dispute panelist who represents clients through all stages of litigation in trademark, copyright, patent, trade secret, false advertising and unfair competition cases, was commended for her international legal training and diverse experience and her “keen eye for subtle lines of argument that prove particularly persuasive to decision makers.”

World Trademark Review is the only standalone ranking publication to exclusively focus on trademark practices and practitioners. To compile the WTR 1000, researchers interviewed hundreds of in-house and private practice lawyers and attorneys based in over 50 countries and were asked to identify the leading individuals and firms in both contentious and non-contentious work. Firms qualified based on their depth of expertise, market presence and the level of work on which they are typically instructed.
