Description

In the digital age, again and again internet services challenge the traditional business models. One well-known example from the United States is the TV-over-Internet service “AEREO”, who was not licensed by the right holders. AEREO defended its business model by saying it assigns each subscriber an individual antenna. Its service was like a personal digital video recorder. Broadcasters argued that AEREO illegally captured over-the-air broadcast signals for free and then charges users to watch over the Internet. Usually, Broadcasting networks charge cable-TV providers fees for such services. In June 2014, the US Federal Supreme Court handed down its long awaited “AEREO” decision, ruling against “AEREO”. The Supreme Court held that AEREO operated equivalent to a cable provider.

The workshop will discuss the decision from the US perspective with stakeholders from both sides on the panel. It will also take a comparative look to Canada and Europe.

The workshop will take place on Monday, September 15, 2014 from 16:00 to 17:30 in Room 107 at the MTCC.
